Cult of Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli

"In character he was sad, melancholic. His greatest hate was of the adulation of his followers."

(Noretta Conci, former student, assistant to and friend of ABM, speaking on BBC Radio 3 in June 1996)

Here are some of the more extravagant comments I’ve read online.

  • Anyone who was lucky enough to attend this live concert can consider themselves among the luckiest people in the history of humanity.

  • Stratospheric, apocalyptic, indescribable. And to think that what we hear on YouTube is only 0.01% of all that art put together. I can't even imagine what it was like live!! I envy those who were sitting in those seats. I wonder if they realized what a miracle they were witnessing.

  • Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli. Silence plays God himself! Harmony of the spheres, sublime emotion in every moment of Liszt's piece, a languid dream for eternity. Beyond this there is no possibility!

  • His precision is almost surreal, and his approach is nearly "draconian." There was no "cinematic effect," just the hands moving and composing from another world
